My name is Catherine Saunders. I came to the
birth center
when expecting my second child twenty-five years ago,
and never left! My first child was born in a
teaching hospital with an obstetrician attending.
Medical students strolling in and out of my room at
random, shaves, enemas, IVs, flat on my back
strapped to a monitor, blood work during
contractions, an admission physical by a resident
who looked about twelve years old. You name it, I
had it!! After that experience I knew there had to
be a better way to give birth! With my second
pregnancy I searched for an alternative. That's when
I discovered the birth center. I had wonderful care
by Rita Rhoads, the certified nurse-midwife who
founded the center in 1978. Our family had an
intimate and memorable birth experience. In fact, it
was the most empowering experience of my life. So
much so, that because of this empowerment, I made up
my mind to dedicate my life to nursing. I wanted to
participate in giving other women the gift of
self-directed birth. So, here I am- bookkeeper
turned registered nurse! I began working at the
birth center as a childbirth educator and birthing
assistant. I had my third child at Birth Care (of
course) and continued working with women from all
walks of life. I am now the Director of the birth
center. My ideals are the same as they were many
years ago when I began this wonderful journey. I
feel personally responsible to every woman that
chooses our practice, responsible to see that she
has a deeply, satisfying and fulfilling experience
that makes her feel proud and empowered. If you have
an opportunity to visit the birth center, please
drop by my office to say hello. My door is always
open.
P.S. The daughter I was pregnant with 25 years ago,
just had her first baby at the Birth Center in 2007
