It takes a village to run a birth center. Every member of the Birth Care team believes in our mission: to provide safe, sensitive and satisfying midwifery care to families within our diverse community, emphasizing  wellness counseling, health education, and the use of natural and complimentary therapies.

Catherine Saunders, RN

Director of Nursing

Catherine Saunders came to the birth center when expecting her second child more than a quarter century ago, and she never left!   She worked her way up from bookkeeper,  childbirth educator and birthing assistant to become the director of nursing. She delivered two of her children at the birth center, and her daughter completed the circle by also delivering at Birth Care.

Kate Loving Shenk, RN, BSN

Kate Loving Shenk RN BSN has been a nurse for three decades. She is a writer and author of "The Prayer Prescription Series," and nine other books currently on Amazon.  Kate is a podcaster and blogger, and has several You Tube stations and conducts regular "Google Hangouts," as well as a radio show where she interviews new authors who write life changing books. She lives along the Conestoga River with husband Tom and Pearlie the dog and T.S.Elliot, the cat!  Explore her projects at  http://katelovingshenk.com/

Jenna Peifer, RN

Jenna resides in Lancaster, PA with her husband Jeremy and their three daughters. She is a Christ-follower who is thankful for Grace and Redemption. As a part-time registered nurse and a full-time mother who has delivered her babies at Birth Care, she affirms that the Birth Care team is dedicated at supporting women to do what their bodies were created to do... grow beautiful babies and bring them into the world with strength and joy!

Katy Uniake, LPN

Katy has a long history with Birth Care,  and  has assisted at births for many years.  She is teaching herself the “Pennsylvania Dutch” dialect used by our Amish clients, much to our patients’ delight! She is an emergency medical technician at the Wakefield Ambulance Company in Lancaster County, and teaches the obstetric component of courses for emergency care personnel. 

Carolyn Kauffman, RN

Carolyn Kauffman is an RN at Birth Care. She enjoys attending out-of-hospital births and checking in on mothers and babies after delivery.

Donna Good, RN

Donna is a multi-faceted nurse who joined Birth Care as a staff nurse in 1987, and has also served as office manager. She works full time at Wellspan-Ephrata Community Hospital on maternity. She has been married to her husband, Dana, for decades, and lives on a dairy farm near Lancaster. She likes the warm, friendly, caring atmosphere at the birth center, so much so that she has had all four of her children at Birth Care. Her hobbies include gardening, interior decorating, reading, and walking. She lives in an 1850’s farmhouse and renovates/ redecorates one room each year. She continues at Birth Care part time, and enhances the birthing experience with her gentle ways and warming smile.
Paula brings a decades of experience to Birth Care, which includes years of working on the labor and delivery unit at Women and Babies Hospital.  She is also known for her backyard farming, and often brings the most wonderful fresh milk and eggs to her colleagues.

Rose Fisher, RN, BSN, SNM

Rose Fisher has 12 years of in and out- of-hospital birth experience as a doula, midwife’s apprentice, and nurse.  She volunteered at a mission clinic/birth center for 3 years in Paraguay, South America, where she acted in the role of primary midwife.   She is  passionate about evidence-based mother/baby care. She is currently pursuing Certified Nurse Midwifery through Frontier Nursing University.  She loves  working in the gentle, nurturing environment at Birth Care as a Registered Nurse.  It provides her with the fantastic opportunity of serving women and watching the miracle of new life being birthed every day.

Diane Wenger, LPN

Diane is a nurse at Birth Care who enjoys helping women achieve fulfilling births. She has three children, who she home schools, and is working to obtain her RN degree.

Jessica Weicksel, LPN

Jessica is a Lancaster County ,PA native who has been serving mothers and babies at Birth Care since 2003. She has attended more than 700 births! Jessica lives on a farm, raises Scottish Highland cattle, and is renowned as a fantastic cook.

Andrea Barbour, RN

Triage Nurse

Andrea resides in Mount Joy with her husband, daughter, cats and pygmy goats.  She came to Birth Care after working in Labor and Delivery at Women and Babies hospital.  Hers is the bright and cheerful voice you hear when you call Birth Care to speak with a nurse.  She is well versed in all topics obstetric, and can help to empower you to make the best decisions for you and your family.  She is currently setting out to continue her education and follow her dreams of becoming Certified Nurse Midwife.
Melissa “Missy” Raub, LPN Melissa resides in Strasburg, PA with her husband, Mark, children and two dogs.  She enjoys hiking/backpacking and dreams of someday adopting a simpler and more eco-friendly lifestyle. Formerly a pediatric nurse, Melissa currently works as an office nurse at Birth Care.  She also enjoys teaching in-home childbirth classes.  After over a decade in pediatrics, Melissa has found that her true passion is working with the local community here in Lancaster County.

Ellysha Baker, RN

Ellysha has worked at Birth Care off and on for many years. She has a wealth of varied experiences. She was an RN at Delaware County Memorial Hospital for 24 years,. She is also an experienced lactation consultant who helps mothers and babies achieve success with breastfeeding.

Pam has been a nurse since 2005. She has worked as a Pediatric Special Needs Care Coordinator before coming to work in the office at Birth Care. She is married with two grown children, and is thrilled beyond measure by her new grand-baby. She loves camping, cooking, reading, and spending time with her two dogs.
